Week One: Monday through Friday be present on
assignment one discussion board
The direct
link to the Internet Safety webpage is
http://ideas4us.com/internet_resources.htm
on that page I have many buttons leading to multiple resources. But
let’s start with the Internet Safety PowerPoint presentation. . There
are 3 options for viewing the PowerPoint, my favorite is Option 2 but if
one doesn’t work try another.
In that presentation there is a picture of me on my space, actually it
is a picture of my dogs but that’s the point, I claim it is me. And in
the next slide is the invitation I received after creating a blog on my
space. I think you’ll find it interesting.
All the links in the PowerPoint, or on the website are hot, they will
take you to many resources. So let’s start exploring through the hot
link listed above. As always I’ll guide you throughout the week.
Question for discussion:
1. Did you find any resources that were new to you or helpful in your
understanding of the topic?
2.. What other resources do you use/can you find that might add to this
presentation? (List them in the website section on the main page & link
them in the discussion. Why did you choose these sites?
3. Would there be value in asking students to create a internet safety
powerpoint for peers or parents? Could this presentation act as a
starting point?
Week Two: (Cyber Ethics) Monday through Friday
be present on assignment one discussion board
Whether the
issue is web etiquette, citing web cites, or other legal issues, can
teachers take for granted that students understand the serious
consequences of their behavior?
There are multiple resources for varying age levels on the topic of
cyber ethics here
http://teachers.archbalt.org/credline/cyber_ethics.htm
Questions for discussion:
1. What can we do to impress issues of computer ethics and consequences
of poor judgement on our children?
2. Do our parents understand their responsibilities? How can we help
them? Could the students be involved in a presentation to parents?
3. Look at the sites added to the web section of our course. Find real
life examples. Will these help?
4. Do you have any sites to add to the website list? List them in the
discussion as well as in the website section
Week Three: (Web Credibility) Monday through
Friday be present on assignment one discussion board:
Please go to
this page and choose an article to review.
http://teachers.archbalt.org/credline/credibility.htm
If you have another article or source you would rather share, please
feel free to post that site for us along with your review or reasons for
choosing that site
Post which article you will review so that we avoid duplication. Then
come back to add your review.
Respond to your classmates as always.
Week Four: Monday through Friday be present on
assignment one discussion board
This summer
I followed these prompts in a class I took with Norm Constantine from
St. Mary's Annapolis. There are ideas we should discuss.
Please read the underlined articles and then tell us what you think of
Blogging. Could a blog be useful in your teaching world? How?
There has been a lot of concern of late with
http://MySpace.com,
http://LiveJournal.com
and other teenage centers of expression. Some of the fear is justified
but there is more to these sites that we often do not see from our
perspective. Nothing Feels Good,
http://www.eschoolnews.com/eti/2005/12/001246.php , by Tom
Huffman in ESchoolNews sheds some valuable light on this subject that is
worth considering before we dismiss these sites as just bad.
Now the flip side

Questions :
1. Go to
http://myspace.com create an
account to look around. (If you have a blog here already try another
social blogging site like my journal or face book or any other side you
have not tried before)
2. How brave are you? What can you learn by creating a Blog here?
3. What do you know about blogging from personal experience?
4. Do you think all educators and parents should experience social
blogging first hand?
Week Five: Monday through Friday be present on
assignment one discussion board
Did you
learn these tricks last week? Creating a blog is not hard. Did you know
that you can invite members or require participants to have an account?
You can even limit who can and cannot reply. Not all Blogs have to be
placed on a site for the world to see. You can create a private and
secure blog.
1 Read the prompt on my blog, create an account for yourself or login
with the account you created for your own blog. Please respond to the
question on the Blog found at http://credline.blogspot.com/2006/07/blogging-some-thoughts.html
3. Take time to go to http://blogger.com and create a blog that could be
used by your students or colleagues. Take the time to look at all the
options. For me the hardest part is creating a user name and password
that I will remember. Perhaps it is not a good idea to have a secret
place to keep all user names and passwords but I need to do that to
survive.
Give us the URL of your blog
once your Blog is created save the URL so you can find it.
You can also find it on the Blogger Dashboard
http://www.blogger.com/home
Please write your user name and password in a safe place.
3. How is this Blog different from the one on My Space
4. What truly remarkable Blogs have you heard about, ones that have
helped those in need?
Week Six: Monday through Friday be present on
assignment one discussion board
This lesson
will give you another edge on what is happening in your student’s world.
As with Blogs there are good things and bad things about Wikis. But the
reality is you need to know about them.
Read what is it with Wikipedia?

Questions
Use this encyclopedia. Look up a topic of interest.
1.Did you get good information? Your students will use this tool.
2.How can you encourage appropriate use?
Week Seven: ( Final Culminating
Project) May be posted anytime during the course.
Throughout this course we have discussed ways to help our students use
Internet Resources in an ethical, legal and safe manner.
Now it's your turn to share.
Who will be your audience, will it be a colleague, a group of
colleagues, an administrator, students or parents.
What lesson will you create to help your audience understand more
clearly the power of Internet Research or Safety.
How will you share the results with your colleagues in this class?
Please see the projects from last semester that are in the student drop
box for examples.
