To Leanne from Colleen

Leanne,
I,P, and E... Do you have a different grading system or do you have a way to convert the I, P, E to letter grades? Just curious to see how it is different from ours.

Response to Colleen

Sorry it took so long to get back to you!  Actually, the kids get I, P, E grades until 3rd grade.  That's when it converts to letter grades.  Basically, I calculate the number grades and then they fall into the three categories.  Confusing, huh?  I wish we could just go back to A-E!!!  Talk with you soon!  ~Leanne :-)

I forgot to tell you how much I also liked the idea of having final thoughts after the Living Stations. That is a good idea for many things. It sort of pulls in those critical thinking skills and requires them to learn the skill of closing.

Pat,
Your final project is wonderful!
I particularly like the way you explained the function of a discussion board. I think that would be most helpful to children and parents.
Handouts are also another big help to the parents and the kids too. They could just print them out and post them on their HW bulletin board at home.
Nice job.

 Hi Dawn,

I viewed your Final Project from the Dropbox. Hey girl, you did a great job!  I like how you inserted the Hot Air Balloons in the slides.  The sixth graders comments and replies that you chose were very interesting.  I also like how you showed some of the comments that need revising. Great job overall!

Dawn,
I really enjoyed viewing your PowerPoint presentation.  I especially liked reading the student responses.  I also thought that it was a good exercise to show the "not so good" student responses.  I think that this would be very helpful in directing the students as they try to respond to the discussions.  Great job!

Dawn,

Your PPT presentation is visually attractive and well organized. Your use of quotes of actual students on the Discussion Board is a good way of demonstrating how this forum is capable of eliciting responses beyond what time might allow in the classroom. Good idea. The calendar is something I use to have on my old website and I forgot about it. That visual is also helpful if you sort of set up a time management option on the calendar. This hopefully prevents the last minute people.

DISCUSSION 4: DISCUSSION BOARD IMPLEMENTATION- Leanne to Dawn

Dawn,
I think your discussion questions will be very useful for your students.  Too often students have so much to say about books they read in class and there is so little time to share in school.  I feel like I can only get to a few students for responses before we have to move on.

Having the absent students participate through the DB keeps them in the loop without your having to spend much more class time--I have a feeling that the students who were not absent will also want to try this out because it’s such a different forum for their ideas.  The questions you created require the students to use critical thinking as they reflect back on the story; it’s also...

I'm having a bit of a challenge with this assignment.  I've looked over a lot of the material and it looks fairly easy to put together a rubric for evaluating a discussion board IF you teach a class that has regular readings involved.  I teach Algebra II and Geometry this year.  There is no reading outside of what is in their text, and the only thing they would need to discuss there...

Rob,
There are some math forum sites on the web; one that I just found might spark an idea. It has tricks for remembering math concepts, etc.  You might have your students come up with some of their own tricks or have them do some web searches to find some, then post their results on the DB.  I took me just a minute to find some sites, so it's not something that should require lengthy reading. ...
