| | Janet,
When is our final project due? I must admit that I have been a little slower than anticipated since going on maternity leave. Was wondering what the due date is in case I need to work a little faster...
Thanks,
Beth |

| | Hey everybody! I'm back...everyone is doing well. Collin kept us up every hour the first night and every three hours last night...not too bad. Glad to see that everyone has been working hard (I have too, believe it or not!) Missed all our great discussions and the harassment too (yes,... |

| | Hi Beth,
There you are again at the top of the class...You are still number 1! So glad to hear everyone is doing well. Please send us pictures and DO YOUR HOMEWORK!
Mary |
| | | | |
| | Thanks Mary! I actually think that you are #1!!!! You've done all your homework on time and participated everyday in class! I say you've earned an "A"!!!!
Will e-mail you pictures to your school account.

| | Glad all is well!!! Can't wait to see your smiling face. I got Boscov's to donate umbrellas for the safety program ...I'm so excited ...hope it rains...Kiss the baby good night for me. I can teach again in the spring...are you interested? |
| | | | |
| | Cool!! Great work getting the umbrellas donated!! It just happens to be raining today...yeah!!!
All is well...Collin's nose is stuffy and it's not from a cold. Took him back to the doctor yesterday and she assured us that he's not sick with a bug (which is a relief)! We're trying to work through it...looks like it's going to take some time...long nights and long days. ... |

| | Welcome back, partner! Nice to see that you're finding time for schoolwork again. So you will be back in your classroom next week, right???? |

Abuse, abuse, abuse. That's what I get for being a Yankee fan. I'm so glad you had so much fun. Really- the Yankee site outdated, expired... I have only two words to say - oh, well... |

Yahooligans: very easy to use and kid friendly!

| | Your first discussion question is located in the attached file. After reading it and composing your answer, post your response here. Don't forget to respond to at least two other responses from your cohorts. (there are now six of us) Good Luck! |
| | | | |
| | | | |
| | Mary,
Your response hit it right on the nose. While money is always an issue, finding qualified teacher to teach teachers is always a problem. That is why courses like this are valuable. Technology changes so quickly it is hard to keep up with it...... |
| | | | |
| | Mary. I think it's scary that you thought the same thing about how advertisers are reaching our kids better than we are. See, great minds think alike!! Seriously, advertisers put a great deal of money, time, and research inot what appeals to people and what will grab their attention and hold it. That is the first thing we learned in college .....motivation is the key to successful... |
| | | | |
| | Jean,
I agree with you too! It's very hard to notivate when the students are use to information changing every two to three minutes. The students are so good at tuning out the information they don't want to hear. They end up tuning us out. |
| | | | |
| | | | |
| | Beth,
Ultimately, the brunt of everything falls on the educator and sometimes,( just like you stated) it is not the parents fault. How can we help them wihout feeling overwhelmed ourselves?
And if the only experience the student has with technology is in the classroom, shouldn't we supply as many opportunities as possible. |
| | | | |
| | | | |
| | | | |
| | Hope you are impressed with my tech skills. |
| | | | |
| | Ginny,
Your skills are great! Hope the new address works....
| | | | |
| | I'm as impressed with your answer as with your tech skills. You're right. For many people, embracing technology is scary and empowering the students to do it becomes a nightmare especially if the students in your class are very "techy". Everything needs to be slow and steady! |
| | | | |
| | I have often wondered whether our educational techniques are really preparing the students for the world outside of school. As our students sometimes daze out of the windows during discussions, perhaps a system such as the one we are using now would be more appropriate. Then each student is responsible for understanding the material and giving feedback about it. However, it is extremely difficult... |

| | Loreta, I like your idea about teaching the basic typing skills along with cursive writing. As we know, the younger the child, the easier they pick up things, so if we start them off early learning the proper technique, it would be to their benefit. I know Robby likes to type some of his homework, even when he does not have to type it, but it takes him a really long time and he has said... |
| | | | |
| | Jean,
Daniel is the same way. He would rather type because his handwriting is so bad. Typing takes a long time so starting at a younger age pronally would have been more benefical. Using it in the classroom is not as hard as you think. Private lessons are always available.
janet |
| | | | |
| | Loreta,
I agree with your statement about the daydreaming student. Sometimes, this type of tool is especially benefical to students like that. Sometimes the tool itself becomes the motivation. I do think this could be used in middle/high school. I do think most people if not all have a computer at home. Perhaps a quick survey in the classroom could answer that. ... |
| | | | |
| | Janet,
I include the question about home computers in my first of the year survey every year. Usually only one or two students answer that they do not have computers or internet. However, when it comes time to do an internet/computer assignment sooooooooooo many problems arise. Another question might be - what are the home computers capable of doing? How reliable are they? |
| | | | |
| | What kind of problems do you usually get? An alternative, I guess would be a hub to connect all the computers in your classroom and have they come afterschool or linch if they need it?? Would that work? |
| | | | |
| | Janet,
I try to take classes to the computer room as often as possible, but that often is a great loss of class time. By the time we get there, open computers, get our passwords straight, there is little time left to actually work on assignments. Then there is the problem of blocked websites - often those that are ok to use. Saving work to the server is difficult if it does not consistently work.... |

| | The defintion of "literacy" has changed over time, and one can only guess that it will continue to do so. |
| | | | |
| | We absolutely must consider the current literacy demands of the technological age if we are striving to empower students to communicate successfully in an increasingly technological society. It is clear that the term"literacy" is ever changing. That means that if we are to be or remain an educated society, we must continue to rise to the demands that... |

| | Yes, I think we should consider and include technology when teaching literacy. I liked the point that the article had when it said "Advertisers know how to reach our youngsters far better than educators." This is sad but true. If we had the resources to help us teach the technology it would be a great motivator for student learning. I think we need training, though... |

They were just t some sites I had stored in my favorites. I wanted you to see that there are so many things out there just waiting to be used in a classroom. |
| | | | |
| | While reviewing the above sites, I found that I liked the teachersdesk.org best since it is geared more toward middle school students. However, I found the www.graves.k12.ky.us site interesting—I like the idea of incorporating a Power point presentation into a lesson to help teach. I would like to start incorporating Power point presentations into my lessons…especially for drills…beats the old... |

| | Mary,
I would also like to add that I really agree with your answer to question 1A...we do need government funding and in order to better prepare our students for the new tech age we need government funding.
Janet,
In reply to your response, it is very difficult to help parents not feel overwhelmed by technology when they don't have access to it themselves (and as... |
| | | | |

| | Beth,
I agree that our students today need and expect us to use more technology in the classroom. They really do not know anything else BUT technology. I think with the use of powerpoint instead of overheads, we will see not only an improvement with attention from our students, but also with their progress. I am going to check out the site you found and look for some... |
| | | | |
| | Mary,
Sometimes I think they know more about technology than we do..I sent Beth some other powerpoint sites. They are spread out across all grade levels. The problem I see with Powerpoint is projection in the classroom. To get more people to use it we need more than one projector. |
| | | | |
| | Thanks for sharing the site. Powerpoint is a great tool but sometimes time consuming. Sometimes you can find powerpoints already created and ready to use ...
check out
just to give you an idea.... |

| | The last site on the list is probably the most useable in the middle school setting. It even has our traditional “What Catholic Schools Mean to Me” assignment and a rubric to match!!!! The other sites are not useful to 6th and 7th graders although some of the ideas for presentation might work. My questions are….How do you find time to make those Powerpoints for presentations? And… How do we make... |

| | Loreta,
I'll have to give the webquest a try...I know that my social studies text is online, which is helpful to students for reveiws however, as mentioned, with limited access, how can it be enforced? |
| | | | |
| | Beth,
How limited are we talking??? With myspace and facebook,it seems that the kids are always on the computer. Is there really that many????? I guess you couldn't enforce it if it is that many but I wonder could you give extra credit that way. I'm sure many parents would jump at that and drive then to the library. |
| | | | |
| | Loreta,
Yes, I agree; the last site was the best. Is it time to write those Catholic school essays? Seems like we just did it. I also agree with your thinking - how do we find the time to prepare all these techie presentations? TV screen is too small, but the projector? That's another new skill for me to learn. So much to learn - so little time.

| | Loreta,
You have so many questions in your comment...I don't know where to begin....Time forPowerpoint??? well...I often use what others have made because of time.. I do love making them though

| | My favorite was the one with the Power Points teaching capitalization & punctuation. I liked the bright vivid red color of the capitals and periods and I also liked the immediate answer, it was simple to just click to the next bframe to see if the answer was correct. Any student would be able to do this. This is definitely something I could do in the classroom. A website... |

| | It was interesting to navigate through the Power Points and web sites ; however, most were a little too elementary for my use in 8th grade. I know little about Web Quests – will investigate further. The teachersdesk.org... |

| | I think the Scotland definition expresses the way I embrace literacy the best. "The ability to read and write and use numeracy, to handle information, to express ideas and opinions, to make decisions and solve problems, as family members, workers, citizens and lifelong learners." This definition embraces the Social Practice approach to literacies education and its impact on the "four... |

| | What constitutes literacy has certainly changed/ expanded through history! The more I read and think about the meaning of literacy, the more I realize that long gone are the days when literacy meant the ability to read and write. I, for one, learned to read with Dick and Jane. “See and say” just doesn’t begin to address the issue of literacy anymore. Oh well… In today’s world, the definition... |

| | Ginny, I think you made a number of good points in your response. I personally believe that life has become too complicated; hence, the number of people on "coping" today, both legal and otherwise, to help them function in today's world. Perhaps the world's spin needs to change velocity.

| | Ginny,
Isn't it difficult to see that our students are moving away from the pleasure of reading a good book? How will the next generation enjoy a story - only on video? But how do we motivate middle schoolers not to give up on the printed word? Or do we have to let go and move on? |
| | | | |
| | Loreta,
I don't think we have to let go and move on but maybe combine the two medias together. Done the right way,I think students could read a chapter or soand watch part of a video/dvd and compare the two.
Janet |
| | | | |
| | We are actually combining technology and the traditional written word in a variety of ways. Just one example is the culminating assignment given to the middle schoolers after they finish reading a novel - watch the video. What's great is when the reaction is that the book is much better. I love it! But as we keep repeating, it is our job to prepare our students to use all of the tools of the day... |

| | Ginny,
I agree with you. I was already a reader and it is sad to see that for many students reading has become a chore. I hope it does not become a thing of the past. It's a shame, there aren't any role models in their age brarcket(like... |

| | Mary, I enjoyed reading your comments. I guess if we think about it, we have come a long way in the last few years. I do agree with you about continuing the tradional. My students seem to rely on spell check; it saddens me that many cannot spell the simpliest word. I guess we have to try to keep up with the ever changing technology of our times. |
| | | | |
| | Mary,
You make some wonderful observations. Being a mother of children who always struggled with spelling, I can truly appreciate the power of spell check on the computer. However, we cannot stop teaching the skill. How many printed assignments have we received with incorrect usasge of words? The computer is only a valuable tool if the person using it understands all of the intricacies of the... |
| | | | |
| | Loreta,
That's so true! Along with understanding the language, you need to understand the use of spell and grsmmar check. Sometimes, I watch Daniel, just click yes to everything when the computer checks his work. Sometimes, he doesn't even read it. I think students need to take a moment, read the spellcheck and make a decision about it. For that, you do need the... |

| | | | |
| | Mary.
As I type this reply in this space with no spell check, I wholeheartedly agree with your defintion especially the part: " In short, the traditional and the progressive elements of literacy must work together in educating the whole person."
In truth, without the phonetic knowledge, even spell check can't help you. I do believe students need to know how to do both. ... |

| | As I read the definition of literacy on the Wikipedia website I noticed that it mentions not just the “traditional” definition of literacy “the ability to use language to read, write listen, and speak”, but also included an expanded, more modern version of what literacy means in today’s time. The defintion of literacy in Scotland is one which I believe fits our society today.
When reading the... |

| | Beth, you made an excellent point regarding newspaper readership. No wonder the number of subscribers continues to dwindle. It's certainly not the price! Gone are some of the simple pleasures of life for... |

| | Beth,
I agree that our real challenge is to "incorporate" the new technololgies into our present definition of literacy. With that motivation, we can begin to restructure how our lessons are taught and how our classrooms are set up. |
| | | | |
| | Beth,
Our answers are very simular. We both liked the Scotland definition for the way it applied literacy to everyday life. My husband and I get the newpaper delivered daily, but I still rather read the news online than opening up the paper!
Mary |
| | | | |
| | Beth,
You have to get the newspaper when your internet is down.....I agree with what you said and often wonder for the student is it because everything is so easily avaiable for them or is it because their life has become so fast paced. They are constantly on the go more than we ever were....no time forthe newspaper.... |
| | | | |
| | Janet,
Ahh, yes...technology at lightning speed...now if I could just get through the drive thru at Dunkin Donuts that fast in the morning!!!
There is no doubt about it, our students are living in a much more fast paced world than we grew up in and it's our job to help them adapt and survive...daunting thought, huh? |
| | | | |
| | There is no question that there has been a change in the way that we receive the written word. It is more readily available and is more up to date than it has ever been in the past. Today we just check our e-mail for the breaking news updates that are sent to us almost as... |

In response to your answer to 1C, I have to agree with you in the idea that students must learn how to distinguish between a reliable source and unreliable source of information. Bias has always been present, whether in the newspaper, on tv, magazines, or websites.

I prefer the definition of Meyer & Rose because it says ....that text is still necessary and valuable, but not sufficient. This is how I feel and what I try to show my students. Besides, how many times was it www.bethhelps.com????? All kidding aside, it is great to help one another, but it is also wonderful having sites that will give us step by step information. We'll get the hang of this yet!

| | These are great sites for information on Word. I find that my greatest challenge is to remember what to do for those things that I use less often. The more often I need to use tables, charts, etc. for example, the quicker I move through the task. Thankfully, the process is fairly user friendly and helps those with poor memories (like me!) through the steps. I just regret that it takes that much... |

Sadly, the instructor was a college freshman who hadn’t a clue how to teach or interact with a classroom full of people...

I especially liked that this site had the most offerings of books that you could listen to right from the computer speakers. Kids love to listen to books (I used books on tape a lot in 2nd grade) and they really learn new words from these types of books because it's something different and fun. ... |

| | Hi Jean,
We are thinking alike again! I loved the site with sound too...you know how excited the little guys get when they have sound! Well come to think of it, we all do! Just ask Janet about the great sounds she found when we took her course a couple summers ago! Your partner, Mary T. and I wanted her to play it over and over again!

| | I feel that the first site is the most useful for middle school students. I have used similar sites to find additional material for lessons. Teaching morals/fables/legends is much more meaningful when the students can read a variety of examples. This is a convenient source for the students. The second site was interesting for the many types of search opportunities. It appears to be a good source... |
| | | | |
| | Yes, Loreta, we do love using picture books even in middle school. Did you check out the chapter one of selected Newbery Medal books site under Story Collections? (the first site Janet provided) Wouldn't open when I tried. Folklore site looked good.
Ginny |
| | | | |
| | Loreta,
You provide some good comments, especially for middle school students. It is interesting how you found the first site to be the most helpful and yet I found it to be the least informative. Different points of view are great to have!!
Beth |
| | | | |
| | Even though I liked all of the sites Janet listed I felt as though I could use, http://www.magickeys.com/books/ with the first grade. This is definitely a site they would enjoy, because it is easy to use and the sound effects, in the story, make it interesting to the young reader. The other sites provided a lot of subject areas that could be very useful for the upper grades. ... |

| | Mary,
I couldn't open the first site but the second one was great, I especially liked the one from Carol Hurst.

| | Having examined all three of the sites presented, I believe all of them are worthwhile. One’s preference of the moment really depends on immediate needs or persuasion. Overall though, I am drawn to the www.acs.ucalgary.ca website because I like the way the offerings are categorized. I especially like the fact that the site includes children’s... |
| | | | |
| | Mary, I agree that the websites that have the most appeal are the ones that are applicable to what we are currently teaching. I find I bookmark many sites throughout the year. I try to organize them in my bookmarks according to the units that I teach.
I have also found that students really do enjoy listening to one another's stories. Peer editing is something that works well. Publishing on-line... |
| | | | |
| | Oh no! I had written my response and then got timed out. Lost it all. Oh well... Anyway, here goes again. I had no idea that there were so many stories available to read/ download. Of course most of the sites are geared for the younger reader. Of the 3 sites presented, the first would best work for middle school students. I tried unsuccessfully to open the Newbery Medal site under Story Collections.... |
| | | | |
| | I would like to include two websites that I explored and deemed worthy to share with busy people. They are: www.eduscapes.com which provides on-line reading and challenges the reader to write story additions or new endings; www.mysterynet.com which offers mini-mysteries to read and also provides games and puzzles for more hands-on fun for mystery-lovers. |
| | | | |
| | Let's try again!!!! I am having trouble with this question. It just won't post. Here goes again.....List at least five guidelines on using the computer in the classroom. It can be directed at student usage and/or be directed at taecher usage. |

| | Janet,
Went through your Power Point and Searching the Net on teachingideas. Found the spinning globes and took the quiz. Can not find question 2C. Please help.
Thanks, Ginny |
| | | | |
| | Hi, Janet!! I watched your Power Point and I loved it!! It's so easy to click through and the text was attractive and easy to read. I love all the web site ideas. I printed them out to keep as a reference. I do not see any question to respond to, though. Will there be a question for 2C? I hope I didn't miss something!! Jean:) |
| | | | |
| | Sorry, I had a computer issue and thought this showed up. Now that you have experiences search engines, programs and all other sets of goodies. I need a list of at least five guidelines on using technology in the classsroom. It can be directed toward the student use and/or your use.u |
| | | | |
| | Guidelines for using technology in the classroom:
1.Teacher should try to keep encouraging technology use for educational purposes.
2. Internet usage must be discussed and an Acceptable Use Policy signed.
3. Technology projects when assigned must have clear cut expectations. Assessment should be a rubric.
4. Teachers are responsible for monitoring students and their visits to different websites. ... |
| | | | |
| | Great job Ginny! You're through week 2!
Loved the guidelines. Monitoring the sites they visit at your level is most important. It's amazing the skills they've developed and the things they know. |
| | | | |
| | Five guidelines on using the computer in the classroom would include:
1. placing controls on websites available for students or monitoring students' visitation of websites
2. showing students the correct way to use computer equipment including the placement of disks, etc.
3. enforcing a "no food or drink" policy on the... |
| | | | |
| | Mary,
All great guidelines. The food and drink is a good addition and proper training means alot. Monitoring again is a must. |
| | | | |
| | In order to maintain safe and effective computer use in the classroom, one must maintain a set of guidelines and standards. Within my classroom I have set he following rules/guidelines in order to keep equipment clean and students safe.
1) Use only those sites which are authorized by the school/parents: make sure filter is activated on full strength!!!!
2) No food/drink... |
| | | | |
| | Beth, your #3 is a good one!! I forgot to mention about NOT downloading anything and about logging off for privacy!! 2 good points!! You go, girl!! Jean:) |
| | | | |
| | I also did not think of the downloading aspect, but that should definitely be included. The students are very quick to download whatever comes up - even if it is research related. A rule that must definitely be included |
| | | | |
| | Beth,
I thought your guidelines were excellent. A no downloading policy is important. The guideline I liked the best was
"Make sure computers are visable to teacher at all times so that student's can be monitored That is so true as a teacher but also as a parent. It would be q great suggestion to give parents. |
| | | | |
| | Beth, I'm wondering what sites parents would authorize...
My Space? We try to be so careful here at school, but what sites do they visit at home? Ginny |
| | | | |
| | Ginny,
I think there are two types parents either don't have a clue about myspace or those that are monitoring it. Maybe the solution would be for parents to have a class on the dangers of the Internet. |
| | | | |
| | Beth, thanks for the reminder about logging off. Sometimes when in a rush (when am I not?), I am guilty of forgetting to secure the privacy of sites visited. Good tip! |
| | | | |
| | There is only one computer that is on-line in my classroom. My biggest concern is that when the students are using the internet in school, the sites have to be appropriate for school.
1. I need to know which site they are going to visit before they sign in.
2. They do not use any e-mail service.
3. They are not on AIM, chat or other such service.
4. They are not to change any settings on... |
| | | | |
| | My Space... ah yes. Nothing but trouble. I don't know the other site you mentioned. I'm wondering just how many parents set up guidelines on the homefront. We may monitor Internet in the classroom, but don't you agree that too many students are just given complete freedom at home? |
| | | | |
| | Facebook is a site that has started with colleges, but is now entering the high school scene. Would we be surprised if our middle schoolers discover it soon? I agree that parental supervision is essential, but all we are able to do is suggest techniques and strategies. School, is another story - we are required to be very aware of where our students are "traveling" in the internet world. |
| | | | |
| | I'm sure the students have found Facebook. There is another one called Xzanga (I'm not sure of the spelling). If you ever see one of their pages...they put alot of work into it. It's a shame they don't put that much work into school. |
| | | | |
| | Ginny, sadly, we can only control what goes on in our classroom, and even that may occasionally take a hit in one way or another. Today on the homefront it is increasingly difficult to monitor what children do with the computer, hence, the impoprtance of screening devices. With parents either away form the home or preoccupied with family or personal matters, young people appear... |
| | | | |
| | Yes, I do. I perioically check Daniel's history to see the sites he has visited but I probally don't do it enough. Too often, the computer is in the bedroom and nobody sees what's going on. There is software that can tell you but do parents care or are they just too busy???? |
| | | | |
| | Okay, we'll try again. Here are some guidelines of using technology in the classroom:
1. Teachers should encourage the use of technology for educational purposes.
2. Internet usage should be discussed and an Acceptable Use Policy should be signed by students.
3. It is the teacher's responsibility to monitor websites visited.

| | Student Guidelines for Computer Usage
1) Students may only use the "student computer"
2) Students are only allowed to visit sites authorized by the teacher.
3) NO downloads
4) Supervised surfing only
5) (older children) Computer Use Agreement should be signed by student and parents.
Janet, I believe you were telling me about a software program that... |
| | | | |
| | Mary, Yes, older students can be very sly. What software program were you and Janet discussing? I've never heard of such a thing...
Ginny |
| | | | |
| | Mary,
There is a software packet that let's the teacher see any or all of the computers in the computer lab at any moment. That way if Tom is IMing in the back of the room you know while sitting in the front. The teacher can't be everywhere and the students are very sly..... |
| | | | |
| | Janet,
Is this software that is available to us? It sounds very useful. Could it also link a classroom computer with the teacher's computer? |
| | | | |
| | I think we should really invest in a program like that too. We could really use it in the computer lab. If a teacher is teaching from the computer and projector up front, it is very hard to monitor all the students and what they are doing on their computers. I know for a fact, that some of the students take advantage of that...even just to play solitare...boy when I was in school... |
| | | | |
| | Here are 5 guidelines for using the internet in my classroom:
1. I must approve of the site to be used.(Make sure it's kid friendly & safe)
2. No eating or drinking around the computer.
3. Student must show me pieces of info gahtered from the site.(to prove they weren't fooling around/wasting time)
4. Student must rephrase info or make sure they create a summary... |
| | | | |
| | Jean,
You make a good point about students having to show you their information and rephrase the information in order to avoid plagerism. I can remember checking sites that students listed and finding motels instead of "information".
Janet,
What was the software you were discussing with Mary about? That sounds cool...seems that parents should... |
| | | | |
| | Jean,
I liked your guidelines!!!I especially liked "showing you the information they gathered in their own words" . They need to be able to do that!
I also liked "Students should use a classlist to record date and time spent on the computer to ensure each student gets their turn and the same amount of time on the computer."
Great idea! |

| | Check out the list of several evaluation forms. Which one did you find most helpful? I liked the tool from yahooligans for students the best. It was short, concise and to the point.
| | | | |
| | Here is yet another topic I'd never given serious thought to - evaluating Internet sites. It is, now that I think about it, the responsibility of the reader to establish the validity and intergrity of sites. Critical thinking is a must.
Of the ten sites provided, I do prefer the two yahooligans sites. On the teacher form, I liked the set up of the Teacher Analysis Form. "The Four A's" seemed... |
| | | | |
| | Yes, ginny another thing to think about. I 've gone to different sites and found them totally useless. I use the 4 A's. The students need to do this because they are much more gullible. |
| | | | |
| | I agree I too like the yahooligans. I also like the last site, the one that listed the ABC's of evaluating sites and the one that used a rubric. I often have to remind myself to look at dates on webpages to see when they were created. Many times sites are outdated as well as the material on the page. It is a very good idea to train our students to evaluate sites as well,... |
| | | | |
| | Mary, So we agree about the 2 yahooligans. Yes, there are many outdated sites out there. Do you check links? |
| | | | |
| | I agree with the both of you. Yahooligans is the most student friendly. Dead links are always out there. I can't stand when I think I have a good link and it doesn't show up. |
| | | | |
| | Mary, examining websites was something I did without a critical tool before. I basically checked out a site and got a general idea about its value or lack thereof. It is good that we now have some a structural guidelines to use when evaluating a site. It allows for a fairer and more critical assessment. |
| | | | |
| | I agree Mary. I use to just look at a site and not really examine it but now I look more closely at everything. |
| | | | |
| | | | |
| | Mary, So we agree about the 2 yahooligans. Yes, there are many outdated websites out there. Do you always check links? |
| | | | |
| | Ginny,
Yes, I do check sites...I just checked the NY Yankees site...that seems to be a little outdated...he he he!
Mary |
| | | | |
| | Mary,
Seems to me that the Yankees site has been ELIMINATED!!!!!!
I know, I'm so mean....Love ya Gin!!! |
| | | | |
| | All right - enough with the Yankees....So sorry neighbor! But think how great it is that now you will have all of this extra time to check new web sites out for your internet class!!! |
| | | | |
| | I love when the discussion flows so well!!!!!!!!!!! |
| | | | |
| | My favorite site was the 3rd one...jhu.edu... I liked this one the best because it had good criteria for evaluation plus I loved the rubric form. It's easy to follow, nice and neat to fill in your yes/no comments. I also liked both of the Yahooligans sites. They were easy to use, clear to read, and attractive. I pretty much hated lib.berkley and the link to alexa.com! They... |
| | | | |
| | Janet, I went to the web.archive......that you said to go to on the course documents page, but I'm confused. You asked if the site is real. Well, it is real because it came up, but it was not authentic, meaning it had no real information about the Golden Gate Tunnel. It had a failed connection when I clicked on one picture about Transportainment. Then, I clicked on... |
| | | | |
| | All of the above Jean!!!!!!!Great job!!!
It's a real siteon the web but totally bogus. These are the kinds of things our students find.
Good Job!!!!!! |
| | | | |
| | I also agree that the Yahooligans site seems to be the most user friendly. I just discussed with my sixth graders how important it is to check the credibility of the sites that they are using for research. It would actually be worthwhile to do a lesson in the computer lab and have them compare a good site with a bad one. A simple rubric for their use would be a valuable tool. Once again the skills... |
| | | | |
| | I agree with you Loreta.Being able to tell bias from a site is an important skill. Just being able to tell is the site is current is what many students don't know how to do. |
| | | | |
| | Loreta, It would be great to get the kids into the comp. lab and do a demo of how to check sites for credibility and worthiness. It's always the same problem, though....finding the time to do this. Plus, for me, personally, I do not know how to set up the main overview screen so they could follow along with me. It would be nice for us to learn how to use it for other projects,... |
| | | | |
| | Jean,
I love seeing you thinking about all these neat ideas you could do with the computer, The screen in the computer lab is very easy to use. The laptop and projestor even easier. I'm not sure what Ray shows the kids but you could always take them upstairs. It is a matter of time.... |
| | | | |
| | That is definitely a problem for me, Jean. When I do take up a class, I usually limit the work to individual computers which, of course, is not as effective. However, I have such a horrible track record with any machinery....ditto machine, laminator, Xerox....that I am almost afraid to try anything new with expensive equipment in the lab. Ahhhhhhhhh something else to overcome! |
| | | | |
| | I liked the Yahooligans website and the easy 4 A's to remember when evaluating webpages. With the incredible number of websites that appear after a few touches of the fingertips, I can see the value of a tool for critical evaluation.
The other website I liked (enough to print) was www.library.cornell.edu. Using five criteria in a very user-friendly fashion. this site offers evaluation... |
| | | | |
| | Mary,
The url is very important. You can tell a great deal from the address. That was a great point to bring up. That's another item to show students or for your students, maybe the parents.... |
| | | | |
| | Ladies,
Abuse, abuse, abuse. That's what I get for being a Yankee fan. Honestly, how low can you go? Outdated, expired site? I am so glad you had so much fun with it. I have only two words to say... oh well.... Ha! |
| | | | |
| | Now, are you and Beth going to behavior or do I have to give out detention??????????? |
| | | | |
| | I think that the Yahooligans Form for Teachers is the most user friendly and with a few changed words, will serve the needs of students and teachers.

The site was very helpful. It rated the software (from 1 to 5) in Educational Value (4.6), Kid Value (4.0) and ease of use (4.85).
The site also explained each of the categories above in paragraph form. The site... |

| | Mary, the Sperkids site is a really easy one to use. I like how you can just click on the first letter of the first word of the title and then click on the title. It was real user friendly and I liked how they had a write up summary about the game too. That was similar to the one I found!! I loved the Jumpstarts....Robby had them when he was so little and he loved them!! ... |

| | Ginny, I have taken note of your two sites. It sounds like they meet the requirements of valuable resources. Check out the one I wrote about for my review. If you love things "English" (and I definietely do!) this is a fabulous resource teaching grammar and writing skills. Hope you like it! |

I checked out your site www.webenglish.com...wow! What a great deal of valuable resources and information. I checked out their grammar part, vocabulary building section and the study guides...long gone are the days of actually having to go out to the bookstore and buy cliff notes...they are online now!!!

| | Jean,
I like the I Spy stuff too! I think it's great for focusing, listening and following directions! Not all evaluations willagree with you that's why we made our own. If I Spy works for you, it's worth it. I have Veggie Tales in my room. The kids love it....poorly rated but they can't get enough of it.. |

Please post your reply. Also, did any of the links take you to another site you could use? As you go from site to site, save the ones you find useful for your last project. |

There were 6 links offered; 3 did not seem to work. However I delved into the ones that did work. These links took me to other useful sites including classzone, randomhouse, and the literarylink. The... |
